Steps to renew your FAFSA
for the 2010-2011 School Year

Follow these steps to renew your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Step 1: Find the Department of Education PIN(s) you used last year to complete the FAFSA. If you can't find your PIN(s), visit pin.ed.gov and request a duplicate.

Step 2: Gather required items for the FAFSA.

Dependent students* – include parent information.
Independent students* – include spouse information if applicable.
  • PINs, Social Security Numbers and dates of birth
  • 2009 Federal income tax forms and W-2s
  • 2009 Untaxed income (i.e. child support and worker's compensation)
  • Current value of checking, savings and investments (do not include your home and retirement accounts)

Step 3: Complete the FAFSA at fafsa.ed.gov after January 1, but before your college's priority date.

  • Click on "Fill Out Your FAFSA."
  • Select the school year from the dropdown box
  • Complete the first page of the FAFSA providing demographic information.
  • The next page will ask "Would you like to pre-fill your application?"
  • Select "Yes" from the drop down box.
  • Enter your PIN.
  • The next screen will pre-fill personal information.
  • Follow the directions to update the rest of the FAFSA.

Step 4: Sign and submit your FAFSA.

  • Verify that all the information is correct.
  • Enter your PIN(s) on the signature page(s).
  • Print a copy for your records.
  • Select the "Submit" button.
  • Print the confirmation page for your records.
